Phreaknic 3.0

October 31, 1999 4:30pm

Moloch goes a little bit country. Yee Haa.

It's 2:00 and tommEE heads out from his apartment in New York toward JFK International. The car service arrives a half hour late and it is stop & go traffic all the way there. Once arriving at the airport and checking in, there is only 10 minutes till the flight leaves. This flight was heading to Cincinnati International Airport in Covington, Kentucky. There was plenty of space on the flight and it was not a bad flight with the exception of the bag lunch they were feeding us on the plane.

The flight out of Cincinnati was delayed and two hours later, I was flying on a small jet to Nashville. This plane was smaller than I expected. Anyway, the plane landed in Nashville about 11:00pm and after hailing a taxi, I arrived at the Drury Inn about 11:30pm. As soon as I checked in and headed off to find my room, I couldn't find it. Basically it was stupidity and one too many drinks on the plane.

I bumped into a friendly local hacker who offered to help me with my heaviest of bags. I was so grateful for this and I gave him a official moloch t-shirt.

It was late but a lot of people were in their rooms on their computers and partying with the doors open. I went to the local gas station and got some beer and returned to the hotel to start exploring. Since in was pretty late there was not too much activity in the con room, I bumped into Hugme who was in charge of the con room network and chatted for a bit and gave him a t-shirt for the great job he was doing for the con. It was kinda dead, so I explored the rooms with open doors. Inside one of the rooms

I bumped into Angus Blitter and Cyb3rCh3f from Hack-Sec. We hung out and I saw Hack-Sec was already online with their war machine on one private internet routers that were donated to this years event. It seemed that this was one of the better rooms due to the the great debates on the state of the union that we happened to just start without planning on. It's just too bad that these were surrounded with such alcoholic bliss that we forgot to tape them or right our ideas down. It would have made an great panel.

The night ended with all of us being quite tired around 5am (I think?). I woke up about 11am when the cleaning lady interrupted my sleep. I showered and headed down the con room with t-shirts for sale. I shared a table with the guys from Hack-Sec and watched their stuff and vice-versa when we needed to take a walk or something. So basically this was the spot to get really cool t-shirts and Penguin mints. Around 3pm I went up and grabbed one of my laptops and brought it down to my table. Hugme ran me about a 100' run to the table and I got online but then problems with the firewall brought the internet down for the con room. About 6pm we started to break down our area and go to find dinner. I was too busy to find the other guys and I went to my room. I was really hyper from the boost of second wind energy that we sometimes get and I had to find a place to chill out.

About one hour later I was visiting the guys from Hack-Sec who were just finishing off their dinner and Cyb3rCh3f gave me my meal, which was a complete suprise. It shows you that those guys have some class. Anyway, we hung out in the room again and I bought my laptops down there to share Hack-Sec's connection to the net. It was a descent speed but it started to vary because some people started a challenge for the people of Phreaknic. These people started a site on the local DNS listing as SPRINGFIELD.FOO. They told everyone it was a BSD machine and gave us flyers with dial up and dns name, also telling us that there was a printer attached. Print to the printer they said and you win. Hack the server and you win. Well after playing with it for a while and some social engineering with recon with the help of maverick, we figured it out the to hack the server was pointless. The server was on a masquerading network and masquerading another network themselves. Angus was able to dial in and see their network with no protection on the authentication on the dial-up. maverick and I were in the room and saw their configuration and it was not a real network to hack. It just became really silly.

We hung out with everyone in that room until about 5:30 in the morning. The Hack-Sec boys need some sleep because they had to drive back home later that same day. So the rest of us started to venture out, I headed to my room. I was to fly out at 9am. maverick and I talked for a bit in my room until he was ready to go to sleep. I packed my bags and got ready to check out. I had a couple of nice suprises along the way of checking out. The two and a half hour phone call didn't wind up on the bill and they didn't charge for any local phone calls either. They called for a cab for my trip to the airport and 20 minutes later it finally arrived.

The plane was headed to Atlanta and then I was to get a connecting flight to New York. When I finally reached Atlanta Airport in this tiny plane but with plenty of room. Two hour layover in Atlanta and then I was supposed to get to New York. Well this is the funny part. It winded up not being a direct flight, it had a stop in Washington DC. Let me tell ya, I am not flying like that for a very long time. Now I am back in New York, got picked up from the airport by a close friend. I am making plans for the next Phreaknic so keep a look out for them.
